Whether a shoe cake topper is edible or not depends on what material they have been made from ~ and what has been used to decorate them.

There are 3 main materials used to make shoe cake toppers:

Sugar paste ~ used mainly for cupcake toppers or for small shoes. It has the advantage of being edible but is also very fragile so is not suitable for posting.

Gum Paste / Flower Paste ~ This can be used for either small cupcake shoe toppers or for larger shoes. Gum paste is mainly sugar so is edible but sets to a very hard finish so apart from where it's used to make small cupcake decorations, eating it is not advised. It is however completely food safe so can be placed directly onto a cake and is also robust enough to survive positing.

Polymer clay ~ probably the most robust material and the most long lasting ~ but completely inedible and you would need to read the small print carefully to see whether the shoe can be placed directly on a cake or whether it needs to sit on an icing plaque which can be removed before the cake is cut.

This depends very much on where you are and what sort you're looking for.

There definitely seem to be more suppliers in the UK than anywhere else. As these types of products are generally handmade to order the best place to find them is somewhere like eBay or Etsy.

Without doubt eBay and Etsy are your best bets ~ or, if it's edible shoes you're after you could have a go at making them yourself using the kits below. They are much easier to make than they look, and once you have invested in a kit you can use it time and time again.

Making shoe cake toppers for yourself is much easier than it looks. There are plenty of kits available which will show you how to make everything from 2D cut outs to 3D shoes which you can stand on top of a cake.

Using a kit will give you a great shoe, the only drawback being that you are limited by the size of the cutters. It is possible to make shoes freehand, but is something that needs quite a bit of practice to get right. The video below will give you a good idea of how it is done.
