Cupcake Decorating Ideas - Pig Cup Cakes

Pig cupcakes are great fun to make. It doesn't matter whether you are making them with your kids, or you are just a big kid yourself, decorating cupcakes is something everyone can enjoy and it's amazing how easy it is to create very effective designs such as animal faces.

Once you've learnt the basics it's easy to adapt the knowledge and create a whole farm of animal face cupcakes and the really great thing is they're simple enough for young kids to do so cupcake decorating can become an inexpensive activity with which to entertain kids during the school holidays.

This hub is about creating pig cupcakes, but you could also create frogs, elephants, cows and ladybirds.

To start you'll need a flat -topped cupcake (and if you've ever had trouble getting your cupcakes to come out of the oven with flat tops then read the article under the 'How to Bake The Perfect Flat Topped Cupcake' Link in the 'Other Cupcake Decorating Ideas' section below.

You'll also need:

White sugar paste icing,

Pink sugar paste icing (you can either buy this pre-coloured or it's an easy colour to do yourself,

A small amount of either black royal icing, writing icing or an edible ink colouring pen,

A cocktail stick or skewer.

A round cookie cutter about the size of your cupcake, one slightly smaller and one very small round cutter for the ears ~ though if you don't have one don't worry, there is another way.

To Make the Pig Face Cupcakes

First roll out the white sugar paste and cut out a circle of icing to top your cupcake ~ in the picture I've used a fluted edged cookie cutter but a plain edged one will work just as well. Stick the circle of icing onto your cupcake using a small amount of butter icing or glace (icing sugar and water mix) to stick it down.

Next roll out the pink icing and using the round cutter that is slightly smaller than your cupcake, cut out a circle and place in the middle of the white sugar paste.

NB: One of the easiest ways to stick sugar paste to sugar paste is to use cooled boiled water as 'glue'.

Now roll a small ball of pink icing and stick it in the centre of the pink circle, this is the nose. Using your cocktail stick or skewer insert 2 holes for the nostrils.

For the ears either cut out 2 small circles of the pink sugar paste or roll and flatten 2 small balls of sugar paste. To ensure they fit properly use the cutter you used to make the pick face circle to cut the ears so they look like half moons. They should now fit perfectly against the pink face circle on the cupcakes.

All you need now is 2 little black eyes made with either food colouring, black royal icing or tiny balls of black sugar paste and you're pig cupcakes are ready.
