How to Make Easy Homemade Ice Lollies ~ Ice Lolly Recipes

Keep Cool with Homemade Ice Lollies
In the searing heat of summer not much beats going to the freezer to choose from a stack of homemade ice lollies, in a range of wonderful fruity flavours.
While ice lollies are readily available in the shops it's also fun ( and potentially much healthier) to make your own, and it's a great way to get kids involved in the kitchen.
With a little imagination and ingenuity your ice lollies can become a far cry from the frozen orange squash ones my Mum made for us as kids ~ they were fine for the first 30 seconds but it didn't take much to suck out all the orange and just be left with an icicle on a stick ~ refreshing maybe but not very appetizing.
Now your freezer can be filled with the taste of strawberries, oranges, lemons and a host of other fruits. Your ice lollies can be multi-coloured, fizzy, fun and full of natural ingredients - in fact you'll know exactly what's gone into them as you've made them yourself.

What Makes a Good Ice Lolly Recipe
Flavour ~ and more importantly flavour that will last ~ and there are loads of ways to achieve this.
Frozen fruit juices make great ice lollies ~ ideally fresh juices i.e. not the reconstituted ones.
Another good tip is to mix the fruit juice with something like lemonade to give the lolly a bit of fizz.
Healthy Ice Lolly Recipes
Check the supermarket reduced sections for soft fruit about to go past it's sell by date, liquidize it and freeze it ~ if you have trouble getting your kids to eat enough fruit this can be a sneaky way of adding to their intake.
Fruit yogurts also make great ice lollies and can be another way of giving your kids a healthy diet while they think they're having treats.
But the best things to do with ice lollies for kids is mix it up.
Start with some fruit juice, about 1" in the bottom of an ice-lolly mould ~ then pop it in the freezer for an hour until it has just begun to freeze, the remove it and add something of a different colour ~ if you added orange juice first you could add crushed strawberries for a great orange / red combination, maybe some lemonade which will freeze white.
Repeat the freezing process (each time you want the layer to freeze enough that it won't mix with the next layer you put in but is still soft enough to insert the lolly stick.
You'll end up with multi-coloured ice lollies that you're kids will be clamouring to eat.
If you've enjoyed this and would like to explore the homemade ice world a little more then why not try a homemade ice cream recipe.
